The French Chocolate: Valrhona

January 14, 2011

When I was wandering around at the Charles de Gaulle airport in France at 4:00 AM, I eyed a Valrhona chocolate bar to keep as sustenance for the next 4 flights ahead of me. I had extra leftover euro in my bag, and figured that the 3.50 euro price tag on the 70g chocolate bar was a steal (which, in fact, it was, according to the $6.99 price on the website).

The Grand Cru chocolate bar from Guanaja was indeed top tier for excellence as the name implied. Breaking the bar into separate pieces was a bit annoying because all the “squares” were differently shaped. However, as soon as the chocolate aroma hit me, I knew I made the right choice. The chocolate not only melted perfectly in my mouth, but with the right acid/fruity balance with the earthy chocolate flavor. Absolutely made my stays at the airports more bearable.
