Dagoba Organic Chocolate: Xocolatl

April 18, 2011

Dagoba chocolate on sale? Why, yes, I’ll buy that.

It was hard to decide between the different varieties available, but in the end I purchased only the 74% cacao Xocolatl (pronounced “chocolatl”) bar, which contains hints of chili, nutmeg, and cacao nibs.

The ingredients in this bar includes organic cacao beans, organic cane sugar, organic cocoa, organic cacao butter, non-gmo soy lecithin, organic cacao beans, organic chili powder, organic maca, organic vanilla extract, organic nutmeg oil, and organic milk. The earthy flavor of the cacao was really well paired with the nutmeg flavor and chili powder spiciness, which ended with a sour and bittersweet note of the cacao nibs. While I could not really taste the maca, I was not sure what it was supposed to taste like, so I cannot say for sure if the taste is prevalent in the bar or not.

This is a pretty healthy bar as far as chocolate goes – in 40g, or 4 squares, it included 190 calories, 16g fat, 17g carbs, 5g fiber, and 4g protein, while loading up on the iron by 40% and calcium at 2% of daily value. Not bad! When including the maca, which is energy-promoting, and the chili powder, which is anti-inflammatory and immunity-boosting, this bar packs quite the punch!
